Data to Discovery

Data to Discovery

Cartographic Design is the process of generating a digital 3D map model from geospatial data sources. By defining your map’s desired location, area, size and features, we synthesize sources of elevation and geospatial data to create a 3D digital model. This process is an active conversation with a series of choices about the properties of the final map. At each step we evaluate goals and limitations, and propose a range of possibilities.

Seeing the Invisible

Seeing the Invisible

When the scale and extent of a map has been determined, the next step is to decide the type and style of information it will display. How can we create a 3D model that expresses information in a clear, accurate, and beautiful manner? Should lakes and oceans be a flat surface, or include underwater bathymetry? Are there routes, boundaries, or locations that should be physically represented on the map’s surface? Do vertical elements of the map require exaggeration? These are just a few of the options we work through, to find optimal solutions to your visualisation goals.

Making it Real

Making it Real

The design process results in a digital 3D model of the terrain, which is then converted into the physical object. Renders of this digital model are used to communicate design options, experiment with lighting conditions, and test arrangements of the map in its intended display space. Once the final design is approved, the map moves to fabrication. The 3D model is converted into a physical object using 3D printing, assembly, and a wide variety of finishing techniques.

Applications

3D terrain models are powerful tools to share information and tell stories. By joining a vision of the landscape with interpretive design, maps can engage visitors and bring the distant parts of our world in touch. The goals of each map are unique to its location and context. Maps can provide orientation, invite exploration, convey beauty, communicate ideas, and reveal history. If you or your organization can imagine a map helping you achieve your goals, we would be happy to work with you to create one.
