Great Bear Lake

This map features Great Bear Lake, the eighth largest lake in the world and the home of the Délinę people. This map is on display at the visitor centre in Dene, and serves to illustrate the many connections between the people and the land and water. Constructed with a circular form, the map design reflects the cosmology of the Délinę, centred on this vast and abundant lake. The structure of the lake bottom is illustrated with bathymetry derived from charts. Lights are embedded into the topography and connected to push buttons labelling places in Dene, creating a linguistic cartography of the region.
